Missin’ Deep Groove, but Still Groovin’

Going to a record store is the perfect way to spend a Saturday morning.

Before moving to the Austin area, my favorite record store in Richmond was called Deep Groove. It’s a small store in with a cozy vibe, and their record selection is amazing. I bought two used Police records there, Zenyatta Mondatta and Outlandos d’Amour. They were only 8 dollars and are great quality. All of the shop’s employees are awesome as well, and extremely knowledgeable on the music they sell. I was determined to find a comparable spot in Austin, and I got lucky!

I searched for a store on Yelp, read some reviews, and decided to check out Piranha Records in Round Rock. I went on a Saturday morning, and it wasn’t overly crowded. The shop is a nice size, super organized, and fun to explore. They have a wide selection to choose from, as well as great music playing over the shop speakers. They are a little bit more on the pricey side, and did not have as many used choices that satisfied my music taste as Deep Groove did. However, that is just my opinion. The selection is still great. They had records available from every genre you could think of, including classic rock, country, indie, funk, and rap. There was an interesting selection of movie soundtracks as well.

In addition to records and CDs, the store also sells clothing, including some really cool t-shirts with their logo. I didn’t buy a shirt, but I did purchase By the Way by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, my favorite album of theirs. Maybe I’ll pick up a shirt the next time I’m there.

If you’re looking for a record store with a cool, funky, and classic vibe like you see in the movies, I’d recommend Piranha Records. Whether you’re a total music geek or are just interested in browsing some records, it is worth a try!
